Volunteering at TCP
The TCP has established its volunteer service programs
in order to increase the working capacity of the TCP and to allow
communication links between people of various backgrounds (gapyear
students, college leavers, and any other interested person) who
are able to provide new input and suggest new ideas and concepts
to aid and improve the overall future success of the project and
its respective programs.
As a volunteer for the TCP, you will be assigned
a specific area of focus within the project depending on your
previous experience, trade skills, goals and personal choice.
In the past volunteers have provided their time and energy for
the various duties mentioned below. Keep in mind though, the TCP
is forever implementing new programs, while others are phased
out, and new areas of involvement are always becoming available.
Travel: Airplane to Colombo airport.
Transportation from airport to project site will be provided.
Duration: Minimum 2 weeks, although a minimum
of 3 months is preferred.
Period: Year around.
Length of term: There is no limit
of time for long-term stays.
Age: Min. 18.
Qualifications: No special skills
are required. A degree of stamina is required for the long shifts
and occasional variations in climate. Volunteers must be enthusiastic,
efficient, willing to work as part of a team and have a sense
of humour.
Work: Measuring turtles, beach
patrols and mapping, conduct education programmes, environmental
hotel presentations, English teaching in monasteries and schools,
office administration, fundraising, IT development work, promotion
of responsible nature tourism.
Lang.: English.
Accommodation.: The type of accommodation
will vary and may include basic standards of living compared to
Western standards.
Cost: The cost includes pick up
and drop from Colombo airport to the project site, accommodation
and food and visa costs. Costs are as follows: £500/US$750
for 2 weeks, £800/US$1,200 for 1 month, £1,500/US$2,250
for 3 months and £2,200/US$3,300 for 6 months. For placements
greater than 6 months please enquire with the organization as
costs may vary and reduced.
